Fishmeal Boilies – Why the hype?

Every year in carp fishing there’s a new “must-have” bait.
One month everybody’s using bright pink wafters. The next it’s fermented particles, cloudy liquids or some new £18-a-kilo boilie with a fancy name and a fishmeal smell strong enough to melt your eyebrows off.
The problem is, carp see it all.
Especially on busy day-ticket lakes, the fish end up getting caught on the same style of bait week after week. That’s why sometimes the best edge isn’t finding the newest bait — it’s using something nobody else is thinking about.
Over the years, some of my best sessions have actually come from using under rated, old-school or downright weird baits that carp just don’t associate with danger.
Here’s a few worth trying in 2026 if you fancy doing something a bit different.
Snails are massively overlooked considering carp naturally eat them all the time.
If you fish weedy pits, estate lakes or venues with loads of naturals, carp are already crunching through snails daily without anglers even realising.
That’s what makes them so effective:
they don’t feel “fished for”.
You can:
On pressured waters, natural often beats flashy.
Everybody uses maize.
Hardly anybody uses chickpeas anymore.
They’re cheap, easy to prepare and seem to trip carp up because they’re just different enough from the usual particle approach.
The texture is softer than tiger nuts and they can be brilliant for short sessions or margin work.
Adding a few into a mixed particle bucket can also give fish something unusual to home in on.
Floating dog biscuits still catch loads of carp, but hardly anyone surface fishes properly anymore.
Most anglers give up if fish don’t take within 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, in summer, carp can spend hours cruising on top completely ignoring bottom baits.
A freelined mixer under overhanging trees can sometimes outfish every “technical” rig on the lake.
The best bit?
You can often watch the whole thing happen.
Still one of the most exciting ways to catch carp.
Bread might genuinely be the most under rated carp bait in the country.
It catches:
Yet most anglers only think of it during winter.
Big chunks of flake in the edge, punched bread over silt, or crust fished on the surface can absolutely wipe the floor with boilies on the right day.
Especially on waters where the fish see nothing but round brown baits 24/7.
Old-school? Yes.
Still effective? Absolutely.
Luncheon meat has this strange ability to pull bites when nothing else works, especially on murky waters, canals or lakes where carp respond well to strong food signals.
Garlic, spicy or smoked versions can all work brilliantly.
The downside is nuisance fish and presentation problems in summer, but when the fishing is hard, meat still catches.
Modern carp fishing has become obsessed with big beds of bait.
Sometimes going tiny is far more effective.
Hemp, groats, crushed boilie, tiny pellets and micro food items can get carp grubbing around for hours without fully feeding them off.
This can be devastating in winter or on hard waters where fish feed cautiously.
Instead of trying to fill them up, you’re creating competition feeding.
Worms are ridiculously under used in modern carp fishing.
Most people think:
“worms = tench or perch.”
But big carp absolutely love them.
A bunch of dendras or lobworms can be incredible:
The only issue is nuisance species, but if the carp are active, worms can single you out massively from the boilie crowd.
People almost avoid sweetcorn nowadays because it feels “too obvious”.
But carp don’t care whether a bait is fashionable.
A bright grain of corn still:
Sometimes anglers overcomplicate things massively.
The funny thing is, the more advanced carp fishing becomes, the more valuable simple thinking gets.
Most carp see:
week after week.
The anglers who stand out are often the ones doing something subtle, natural or completely different from the crowd.
Not every session needs:
