After a tough winter of blanks and scratchy results, Gary Barker hit it just right on the Birchwood syndicate in Lancashire, enjoying a proper red-letter session with 10 fish during a 72-hour stay – topped by a 31lb 10oz mirror and backed up by fish of 30lb 2oz, two at 28lb, 24lb, 22lb, and a number of doubles!

Fishing a known patrol route, Gary introduced a subtle mix of flaked maize, maize, hemp, pellets and crumbed Switch and DNA Baits Bug boilies, all laced with Pineapple Hydro Spod Syrup to build the confidence of the fish. Once the bites started, they didn’t stop!

The standout performer was a pink Switch Half Tones dumbbell wafter on the ever-reliable German rig, fished Iain Macmillan-style with a little mesh PVA bag of pellets on the hook. One particular rod in the “ambush area” did the damage time and again.
