Koi carp are some of the most beloved ornamental fish in the world, known for their vibrant colors, graceful swimming, and long lifespans. If you’re thinking about adding koi to your pond or already have some, you might be wondering—just how long do koi carp live?
Koi carp are incredibly long-lived compared to many other fish species. On average, koi can live between 20 to 50 years. However, with the right care, some koi have been known to live much longer, even surpassing a century!
One of the most famous koi was “Hanako,” a scarlet-colored koi from Japan that lived for an astonishing 226 years! Hanako’s age was confirmed through growth ring analysis of her scales, making her one of the oldest recorded fish in history.
Several factors influence how long koi live:
If you want your koi to live a long and healthy life, regular pond maintenance, high-quality food, and a stress-free environment are key. Many koi keepers form deep attachments to their fish, as these beautiful creatures can recognize their owners and even respond to feeding time!
