Review – Daiwa Tournament TS5000BE

The Daiwa Tournament TS5000BE reels have a charm all of their own. I really like their old-school styling, and they feel like absolute tanks in the hand — tough and built to last.

That said, they’re not the smoothest reels I’ve ever used. Mine made quite a lot of noise when reeling in, and the retrieve felt a little rough compared to more modern designs. I also customised mine with Weston Developments spools and speed caps, which really improved the feel and gave them a nice personalised touch.

While they’re solid and dependable, I personally prefer my Shimano 14000 XTE reels. The Shimanos are noticeably smoother, and I feel I can cast further with them. Still, for anglers who appreciate robust engineering and a retro look, the TS5000BE has a definite appeal.

Overall

A rugged, retro-style big pit reel with tank-like build quality, though not as smooth or long-casting as modern alternatives.

Pros

Classic old-school styling
Built tough and highly durable
Large spool for distance work
Customisable — speed caps and spools look great
Solid feel when playing fish

Cons

Noisy and a little rough on the retrieve
Heavier than some modern reels
Not as smooth or long-casting as newer designs like the Shimano 14000 XTE
